Restoring Healthcare for Vulnerable Populations in Syria
The ongoing conflict in Syria has devastated millions of lives, displacing families and leaving them in dire need of essential services. Among the most critical of these services is healthcare.
With Syria’s healthcare system in collapse, access to life-saving medical care has become a distant hope for many. In response, HACS partnered with an international NGO to launch a rehabilitation project and reopen a comprehensive Health Centre in the Azez region.
This initiative goes beyond just healthcare—it restores hope, dignity, and the chance for survival.
Why the Health Centre in Azez?
Years of conflict have left Syria’s healthcare system in ruins, creating a critical need for medical care, especially for the 6.9 million internally displaced people (IDPs).
Areas like Azez are overwhelmed by the influx of displaced families, struggling with deteriorating infrastructure and overburdened health services. The Health Centre in Azez serves as a lifeline, treating over 50,000 patients annually—families devastated by war, poverty, and displacement.
Services Provided by the Health Centre
Staffed by a dedicated, skilled team, the Health Centre in Azez offers a wide range of essential services, including:
- Internal Medicine
- Pediatrics
- Maternal Health
- Dental Care
The multidisciplinary team includes:
- A Project Manager
- A Hospital Administrator
- Five Doctors (specializing in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Dentistry)
- Four Nurses
- Two Midwives
- A Pharmacist
- A Patient Record Administrator
- Technical Personnel, Cleaners, and Drivers
This team tirelessly provides essential healthcare to thousands of people, many of whom have no other access to medical services.
How HACS Supported the Delivery of Healthcare
Restoring healthcare in conflict zones is always a challenge, but HACS took a strategic, step-by-step approach to ensure success:
- Facility Identification: We found an unused facility in a safer part of Azez that had stopped operating due to a lack of funding.
- Needs Assessment: A detailed assessment was conducted to understand the community’s healthcare needs and the required staffing.
- Staffing and Training: Local staff were hired and trained to ensure the centre’s operations were efficient.
- Renovation and Equipment: The Health Centre was renovated and equipped with necessary medical tools, including a generator for reliable power.
- Medicines and Supplies: Essential medicines and medical supplies were sourced and delivered, allowing the facility to start serving patients right away.
Ongoing Support and Monitoring
HACS maintains a strong presence on the ground, overseeing daily operations. We ensure the staff are well-supported, supplies are stocked, and the facility runs efficiently. Regular monitoring and evaluation are conducted to improve the quality of care and ensure transparency with our NGO partners.
The Long-Term Impact
This project is not just a short-term solution—it represents a step towards sustainable healthcare support in Syria. The Health Centre in Azez is helping families receive the medical care they need, enabling children to grow healthier and bringing stability back to communities torn apart by conflict.
