Building Homes for Displaced Syrian Families

More than a decade of conflict in Syria has left millions of families uprooted from their homes. Among the 6.9 million people displaced inside the country, many have sought refuge in the Idlib region. Life in overcrowded camps has become a harsh reality for these families, where safe housing is a constant struggle. Extreme weather, limited resources, and an uncertain future add to their burden.

In response to this crisis, HACS has helped facilitate and implement the construction of over 3,500 homes in Idlib, Syria, for several international NGO partners.

These homes provide shelter and a sense of dignity and hope to families who have endured unimaginable hardship.

Tackling the Shelter Crisis

Living in makeshift tents and temporary shelters exposes displaced families to Syria’s extreme climate—blistering heat in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. These conditions and a lack of essential services like clean water, sanitation, and electricity offer little protection. Worse still, these shelters leave families vulnerable to health risks, exploitation, and abuse.

To address these challenges, we focused on a long-term solution: durable homes that provide safety and stability for the most vulnerable families.

Building Homes, Restoring Dignity

Our project focused on constructing homes that ensure safety and restore a sense of normalcy and dignity. By using local materials and labour, we’ve contributed to boosting the local economy in the process.

Each home includes:

  • Size: 39m², with 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a private courtyard.
  • Materials: Locally sourced briquettes and reinforced concrete roofing.
  • Safety: Iron doors with locks, PVC windows, and internal walls for privacy.

These homes provide security and comfort, shielding families from the harsh weather and the difficulties of living in temporary camps.

The Process: From Planning to Completion

We followed a structured process to ensure every home was built to the highest standards:

  1. Site Preparation: Clearing and levelling the land and setting up utilities.
  2. Foundation Work: Laying concrete foundations with plumbing and electrical systems.
  3. Construction: Building walls and roofs using local materials.
  4. Finishing Touches: Installing doors, windows, and water tanks.
  5. Utility Setup: Connecting plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  6. Relocation: Moving families, prioritised by need, from tent camps to new homes.

We conducted regular inspections throughout the process to ensure the homes were safe and ready for the families.

Prioritising Vulnerable Families

Our project has focused on the most vulnerable. We prioritised families led by women and those with disabled members, ensuring they received safe shelter first.

A Lasting Impact: Over 3,500 Homes Completed

To date, we have built over 3,500 homes, transforming the lives of thousands of families. These homes are more than just places to live—they represent a fresh start, offering the stability needed to rebuild lives with dignity and hope.

Looking Forward: Continuing the Work

This project highlights the power of collaboration between humanitarian organisations, local communities, and donors. Yet, the need for safe housing remains urgent. As the crisis continues, HACS remains committed to building more homes, one family at a time.
